Clinton’s Crew
Nantucket - the ‘faraway land,’ has a history with rebellious Gearheads...
and we embrace it. Nantucketers were not welcoming to the automobile and in 1908, under pressure from the island, Massachusetts passed a law banning cars from the island. A few off-islanders challenged the law, but Nantucket remained car-free until 1913 when Clinton S. Folger, a vocal automobilist took a stand and brought his car on-island. Both supporters and critics carefully watched to see how much Folger’s car tested the will of Nantucket selectmen. Within weeks town leaders called a hearing. As debate heated up, Folger dug in and hitched a pair of horses to the car and towed it through town. Folger’s “Horsemobile” made headlines in off-island newspapers and soon people from all over the country wrote letters rooting for Folger and his cause - and so do we.
1913 pays homage to Clinton Folger - so much so we named our club after the year he made history; and made what we do possible. 1913 is now offering a membership package dubbed ‘Clinton’s Crew’. Members enjoy full access to 1913’s cars, club floor amenities and social calendar of events.
